What's a Hackathon?
A hackathon is an event where participants involved in software or hardware development collaborate on various projects in competition with other teams. Typically, project leaders pitch their ideas to the group before forming teams – participants are free to join whichever project catches their interest. These fun, intense events usually have a specific focus, such as a particular topic, challenge or user demographic. Teams usually form with a mix of Hackers (Hardware/Software/Engineering), Hustlers (Marketers, Business Developers) and Hipsters (Designers, Artists) to get the best possible outcomes from diverse skills. They can take a variety of forms, for a range of intended actions.
We're putting those together right now. Stay tuned for updates on this section.
Prizes, you say?
Hard work should not go unrewarded, so we're putting together some incentives to help spur your teams efforts along. We'll have more to announce on this front for 2017 but it will depend on who comes onboard as Event Partners.
Here's last years prize packs to help illustrate what's on offer:
Overall Winner: $1500 cash
DigitalCityZen Category: $1000 cash / $250 credit with The Business Centre
Crowd Fave: $500 comprising $250 cash/ $250 credit with The Business Centre
Rather than opting for set meal times and breaking your flow, we've found it's simpler and easier to support some episodic grazing with handy, healthy options. We'll make sure you don't go hungry though, as supercharged synapses need good food, caffeination and hydration.
Can't make it but still interested?
The event is being specifically designed to integrate the perspectives and experience of people from all around the Hunter region. By leveraging our relationship with Atlassian, using their Team collaboration systems and platforms (such as HipChat for secure online conversation), we can integrate remote players as participating team members. Friday night will see teams forming on particular ideas, which will be announced over our Twitter hashtag: #hunterhackfest. You can then get in touch with the team you want to work with and start contributing from Friday night to help them create a winning combination with your experience and understanding of the problems you face on a daily basis.
What technologies will I be getting exposure to?
With a focus on teams creating a digital footprint as evidence of their collaboration effort, we naturally turn to platforms like those from Atlassian, with their suite of Confluence (EnterpriseWiki), JIRA (Project Task + IssueMgt + #1 tool used by Agile software development teams), HipChat (secure team chat) and BitBucket (distributed version control systems) as our starting point. With Laughing Mind as our local Atlassian Experts partner creating and backing the event, you'll have help on tap to get you set up and running.
Of course, there are other team collaboration platforms available for you to consider, but we like to start with HomeGrown if we're serious about maturing Australian industry capability - with 5 of our 2015 UoN ICT graduates now working at Atlassian, it also makes a nice starting point and segue into their experience.
We'll also be making available some Estimote Location + Proximity Beacons for those wanting to tinker with some IoT deployments with a turnkey beacon product using Bluetooth Low Energy with a 70m range. We know there are some cool urban space activations possible with them, just waiting for the right team.
